Homeopathy is a system of treatment discovered by Dr Samual Hahnemann 200 years ago. It was a popular and successful method of treatment then, until the advent of antibiotics and the subsequent growth of the use of pharmaceuticals.

However it is still used today by naturopaths, homeopaths and some doctors as a natural form of medicine used by over 200 million people worldwide to treat both acute and chronic conditions.

Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like cures like" (similia similibuscurantur) which means that if a substance can cause a set of symptoms in sensitive individuals, then that same substance, in very minute doses, could be used to cure a similar set of symptoms that result from a dis-ease process.

When treating a patient with homeopathics, the practitioner does not choose to treat a diagnosis, but instead, selects and analyses the patient's specific symptoms and the various underlying causes or triggers of the patients dis-ease. During the homeopathic consultation the practitioner asks many questions about the patient's lifestyle, eating habits, emotional state, temperament, personality, sleep patterns and medical history.

This holistic nature of homeopathy means that each person is treated as a unique individual and their body, mind, spirit and emotions are all considered.

Often the first remedy given will set off the patient's natural healing energy or vital force. The patient reports feeling "better within themselves" even though the symptoms may still be present. Then as the vital force rebalances itself, the body's natural healing energy deals with the symptoms.

Due to the extreme dilution of homeopathic remedies, chemical side effects are not possible. Homeopathic medicines are safe to use when used appropriately under the guidance of a qualified homeopath. They can be taken by people of all ages, including babies, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

In cases of long term chronic diseases, there may be an aggravation of the symptoms. This means that symptoms of some earlier health problem might suddenly re-occur. Aggravations occur more so in cases where symptoms have been long suppressed with medications. In this case, the homeopathic remedy should be stopped, and the clearance of old symptoms will continue on its own and less aggressively. It is a good sign.

In 200 hundred years of using homeopathics there have never been any side effects upon the foetus or the pregnancy.
