Hyperthermia Treatment

Hyperthermia treatment is a non-invasive, non-toxic method that induces the body into a controlled, feverish state, improving the body's ability to heal itself.

As an integrative approach, hyperthermia treatment is almost always used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments for immune stimulation and oncology purposes and can be applied locally or as a whole body treatment. Most commonly, it's applied in conjunction with radiation for the purpose of treating cancer.

How does hyperthermia treatment work?

Exposing body tissue to high temperatures up to 40 degrees celsius, the treatment aims to stimulate the body's immune system and enhance the body's ability to heal on its own. It may even improve the performance of certain drugs through increasing cellular uptake.

When a feverish state is induced, this begins stimulating the release of heat-shock proteins on a cellular level, boosting the body's immune defence.

The benefits of heat treatments date back thousands of years, but now advanced, state-of-the-art technology allows for whole body treatments that can artificially create the desired immune system boost in a safe manner without being unwell. Additionally, thet treatment can be applied locally to treat tumours close to the surface of the skin, such as melanomas.

Cassia Wellness Clinic is proud to use the Heckel HT3000 Whole Body Hyperthermia System, a globally used machine that uses water filtered infra-red A spectrum light to heat the skin without causing harm to the skin. It's the most efficient wavelength light for warming without burning.

What is hyperthermia treatment used for?

Utilising the body's natural defence mechanism to reclaim and enhance a healthier state is particularly advantageous for chronic sufferers and those with malignant illnesses.

Benefits of hyperthermia:

  • Reduces inflammation and pain
  • Enhances the benefits of IV therapies
  • Improves immune system responses
  • Encourages the body to self-heal
  • Improves blood flow
  • Improves the delivery of medications throughout the body
  • Increases oxygen levels to tumours - when treated in conjunction with radiation, it makes it more effective
  • Stimulates the repair and regenerative processes of each individual cell

Immune stimulation

When heat shock proteins are released in the body, the immune system has the ability to take advantage of the "danger signals" they send. In response, this allows for the generation of an heightened immune reaction.

When these heat shocks are released from stressed or dying cells, they activate dendritic cells, which then transforms them into mature cells improving the immune recognition of antigens.

Mature dendritic cells can program lymphocyte effector cells in an antigen-restricted manner, thus limiting collateral damage to normal healthy tissues.

Cancer & Oncology

In conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation treatments, hyperthermia assists in working to better treat cancer that has spread (metastasized) and improves the effectiveness of the chemotherapy.

Hyperthermia treatment uses the heat to damage and kill cancer cells while leaving normal, healthy cells unharmed when heat shock proteins are released. Local hyperthermia can be used to heat small areas, such as treating tumours located within a few centimeters of the body.

When heat shock proteins are released from stressed or dying cells in the body, this activates dendritic cells which then transforms them into mature cells potentiating immune recognition of antigens.

Hyperthermia is not used as a sole therapy and is not a cure for cancer.

Potential side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Anxiety

During hyperthermia treatments, medications can be given to assist in the occurrence of these side effects or the rate of increase in body temperature can be reduced or interrupted. Those with scars may experience increased heat where they're located - this is avoided through careful management but very rarely leads to discomfort, pains, burns or blisters.
